10/10/07: U14’s Battle in Columbus
On Saturday, October 6 the U14 Boys Lazers won a hard fought game 0-1 in Columbus to stay top of the league by themselves at the midpoint of the season. Lloyd Mohney drilled in the game winner late in the first half to give the Lazers the lead.
From the early stages it was clear that Columbus was playing for a tie in the match. The coach had a clear substitution pattern of changing players every two minutes to upset the rhythm in the game. “It was a defensive effort from them. They were trying to nick a goal and win 1-0 but luckily we scored first and they had to change their style a little bit", said Head Coach Dale Davis.
Over the 70 minute period it was a hard fought game with many tackles and some reckless challenges. The referee seemed to have it under control whistling many fouls and keeping the players under close watch. The Lazers had the majority of the possession in the game but had a difficult time breaking down the Red Star defense. When they did find gaps they were not able to finish them off. At halftime, the score could have easily been three or four to zero but chances were missed and the game remained close. “It was the tightest game so far this season for the boys and I think lessons were learned,” said Davis.
Next up for the team is a trip to Kennesaw FC on Saturday, October 13 at 4:00pm. In the first meeting at home the Lazers won 7-0. The team is five matches away from reaching its goal of promotion to Classic III.
9/30/07: U14 Boys: Top of the Table
The U14 Boys visited McCurry Park on Saturday, Sept 29th for a top of the league clash with AFC Lightning. Not only was it a match for first place in the league but it is a big derby game and one each team will battle hard to win.
In the first half the game started a bit slow with each team not wanting to make an early mistake. After about 8 minutes PTC really settled in and started to produce some entertaining play. At 12 minutes the team was ahead 1-0 through a fantastic free kick from about 25 yards out. Austin Ingram drove a ball deep into the top corner of the back post to put the Lazers ahead. Three minutes later PTC scored again and the game started to unravel for AFC. Lloyd Mohney dribbled three defenders and slotted a ball in the back lower corner past the AFC keeper. At halftime the score was 4-0 with goals added by Christian Paone and Aaron Thornley and there was no doubt that the Lazers were going to be victorious.
Early in the second half AFC scored a nice goal on a thru ball to make it 4-1, but neither team really threatened after this with the majority of the match in the second half being played in the middle third of the field.
Overall, the Lazers had about 70% of the possession in the game. “We played a brilliant game, probably our best of the year so far and I am very proud of the entire squad for finishing them off early,” said Dale Davis, head coach.
Next up for the U14 Lazers is a trip to Columbus on Saturday, October 6th to face third place CFC Red Star. A win in this game will really begin to separate the team from the rest of the league.
9/24/07: The U14 boys are off to a flying start in 2007. In the first three matches of the new season the team has scored fourteen goals and only conceded one on their way to three consecutive wins.
The team next plays at AFC Lightning on Saturday, September 29. It is the biggest match of the season so far with both teams unbeaten and sitting top of the league. “This game will be the deciding match of the league,” said Head Coach Dale Davis. He adds, “It is a local rival and both teams will be anticipating the big game and ready to show what they can do.”
Captain Lloyd Mohney is off to a great start scoring a hat trick in the first match and adding goals in each of the last two games. Mohney opened the scoring in the game on Saturday against Cobb Strikers with a beautifully taken header in the 2nd minute of the match.
The team has been quick starters scoring the majority of their goals this season in the opening 20 minutes of play. So far, they are dominating play in the Classic IV West league as they attempt to reach their goal of an unbeaten run and promotion to Classic III for the Spring season.
9/1/07: The U14B cruised through the group stage at Thunder Road Classic. In the first match the team posted a 5-1 win against River Region Rapids. The next game was settled by penalty kicks due to inclement weather on Saturday night and goalkeeper Josh Slepicka showed his class stopping three penalties to help the team win its second match. In the final group game the U14 boys made it look easy against Birmingham United displaying some dazzling passing and scoring some brilliant goals to win 4-0.
In the final, it was a challenging game but again the team was superior in the match taking a 1-0 lead early on. However, some relaxed defending allowed Top of Florida to draw level at 1-1 and send the game to penalty kicks. Slepicka was able to stop two penalties again but luck was not in our favor this time around as we missed three of our own and lost in penalties.
It was a great tournament for the team. They represented the club well and displayed outstanding attacking football with some creativity to thrill the spectators. The U14 boys will be competing again this weekend at BSC in the Atlanta Cup. Come out and support them as they attempt to challenge for their second tournament in two weeks.
